McDonald III (New York State Assembly Member), and Julie Tighe (President, NYLCV)\u00a0stand in front of a Sprague truck that is powered by renewable diesel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The New York League of Conservation Voters and Sprague Operating Resources LLC celebrated a significant step towards a greener transportation sector in Upstate New York with the arrival of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spragueenergy.com\/fr\/renewable_diesel\/\">renewable diesel<\/a> (RD) supply at the Sprague Fuel Terminal in Rensselaer, NY.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sprague Leads the Northeast&#8217;s Renewable Fuel Charge<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sprague was an early adopter of the fuel in the Northeast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spragueenergy.com\/fr\/sprague-operating-resources-llc-sprague-introduces-renewable-diesel-to-ny-metro-area\/\">supplying renewable diesel<\/a> out of its Bronx terminal location in June 2023, becoming the first in the region to do so. Next, Sprague made history by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spragueenergy.com\/fr\/sprague-operating-resources-makes-history-supplying-first-renewable-diesel-retail-station-in-nyc\/\">partnering with Sonomax<\/a> to open the first retail fuel station east of the Mississippi offering renewable diesel and consuming in its Lawrence NY fleet while offering RD to commercial fleets in Lawrence as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why Renewable Diesel Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renewable diesel is a game-changer when it comes to reducing emissions. It offers immediate reductions in greenhouse gases, particulate matter, and NOx emissions \u2013 a crucial step towards achieving New York&#8217;s ambitious climate goals. This is especially important considering transportation is the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. Here&#8217;s a breakdown of what makes renewable diesel special:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Made from Sustainable Sources:<\/strong> Unlike traditional diesel, renewable diesel is not a fossil fuel and is derived from renewable sources like used cooking oil, vegetable oils and animal fats.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Drop-in Solution:<\/strong> It can be used directly in existing diesel engines without requiring modifications, making it a seamless transition for the transportation industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Collaborative Effort for Cleaner Air<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program began promptly at 10:30 AM, as Julie Tighe, President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nylcv.org\/news\/sprague-renewable-diesel\/\">New York League of Conservation Voters<\/a>, provided opening remarks and welcomed everyone. Kendra Hems, President of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nytrucks.org\/\">Trucking Association of New York<\/a>, acknowledged renewable diesel&#8217;s role in providing a greener path without requiring significant investments in new equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift towards renewable fuels aligns with the goals of the Clean Communities coalitions and energy associations. &nbsp;Kris DeLair from <a href=\"https:\/\/eseany.org\/\">Empire State Energy Association<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ccofcny.com\/\">Clean Communities of Central NY<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleancities.energy.gov\/coalitions\/albany\">Capital District Clean Communities Coalition<\/a> all commended Sprague&#8217;s initiative and pushed for supportive legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The positive impact extends to public health as well. Brian Brundige of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terpeningtrucking.com\/\">Terpening Trucking Company<\/a> highlighted the efficiency gains and reduced emissions associated with renewable diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local business leaders also chimed in with their support. Gregory O\u2019Connor, President of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maincareenergy.com\/\">Main-Care Energy<\/a>, a customer of Sprague, spoke about his company&#8217;s commitment to clean energy. Bob Long Jr., President of <a href=\"https:\/\/longenergy.com\/\">Long Energy<\/a>, another Sprague customer participating in the event, echoed similar sentiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 11:10 AM, the ceremony shifted to a ribbon-cutting event held in front of the Terminal Rack, marking a symbolic step towards a cleaner future for transportation fuels, as vehicles were loaded with renewable diesel for their deliveries into the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Road Ahead is Clear: Renewable Diesel Leads the Way<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renewable diesel represents a significant step towards a cleaner transportation sector in New York.
