New York’s First Solar Tank Now Live

Sprague expands footprint of solar tank panels, launches first in New York State.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire Sprague  Resources LP, a pioneer in the energy industry, continues its dedication to sustainability and meeting customers’ changing energy needs by expanding the first-of-its kind flexible solar panels installed on fuel storage tanks.

The initiative was first launched in 2017, with the first in the nation’s application of flexible solar panels on a Sprague storage tank in South Portland, Maine.  Since installing the panels, the solar tank has been producing nearly 100,000 kWh of energy per year, helping to reduce the terminal’s operating costs through the use of renewable solar energy.

In 2020, Sprague received the Sustainable Impact Award at Global Tank Storage Awards, hosted by Tank Storage Magazine at the StocExpo Conference in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Tank Storage Magazine is the leading industry publication dedicated to the bulk liquid storage sector and the award recognized the innovative application of a solar energy system at a petroleum storage terminal.

After seeing great results, Sprague quickly expanded the use of solar panels on storage tanks at their Rensselaer terminal just outside of Albany, New York. The solar implementation is expected to fully offset the annual electricity demand at this facility.

“It is wonderful to be part of such a forward-thinking company,” said Peter McHenry, Sprague’s Rensselaer terminal manager. “The energy savings will have a huge impact on reducing our operating costs, but the dedication to sustainability is a benefit to not just our terminal, but to the community as a whole.”

The implementation of this project marks the first use of solar tanks in New York State and continues Sprague’s long-term dedication to sustainability. The 150-year-old company was the first to bring ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel to the Northeast in 2000, also in New York, and the first BQ9000 biodiesel certified marketer in the United States.

“Sprague is pleased to continue to bring innovative technology and sustainable options to our terminals and our customers,” said David Glendon, president and Chief Executive Officer at Sprague. “These flexible solar panels allow us to save money and benefit the environment, while leveraging our existing infrastructure. Whether it be by introducing ultra-low sulfur diesel to the Northeast market or by adding our turnkey solar panel technology onto our storage tanks, Sprague will continue to be a leader when it comes to sustainability efforts, as well as utilize forward-thinking technology better serve our customers and the communities that we provide energy to. We believe that our energy truly does make a difference.”
