How a 150-year-old energy company in New Hampshire is helping businesses invest in a more sustainable future

As interest in the use of more sustainable energy grows, one local company is positioned well to help other local businesses reduce their carbon footprint.

With early roots tied to coal, Sprague, an energy company based in Portsmouth, N.H., has been helping customers evolve their energy use for more than 150 years. Today, the company is known for their involvement in the purchase, storage, distribution and sale of refined petroleum products and natural gas. But what many may not realize is that Sprague began supporting sustainable energy initiatives years ago, becoming the first petroleum company in the nation to earn the status of Biodiesel Board Certified BQ-9000 Marketer in 2006.

More recently, Sprague earned the international Sustainability Impact Award for their first-in-the-nation thin film solar panels application on a liquid fuel tank in South Portland, Maine, and has worked with Biofine Developments Northeast Inc. to begin offering advanced renewable liquid fuels created by transforming waste material into zero emission heating fuel.

“As customers increasingly seek to use more sustainable energy options, we are excited to expand our portfolio of offerings,” said David Glendon, president and CEO of Sprague. “We continually seek ways to leverage our infrastructure and experience as part of our commitment to energy innovation.”

The opportunity to use greener energy may be easier than many business owners realize. From biofuel, renewable fuels, and net zero diesel to helping customers more easily participate in Maine’s Net Metering and carbon offset programs, Sprague is committed to helping customers find more sustainable energy options.

Today’s business owners may be able to increase their efforts to offset their carbon footprint by participating in Sprague’s programs. Two sample options are below:

  • Carbon Offset Program: Help reduce your carbon footprint by investing in carbon emission reduction projects. Adding carbon offsets to your natural gas or other energy purchase is an easy way to make a difference without costly infrastructure changes.
  • Maine Net Metering Program: Businesses in Maine can save on electricity costs and support solar energy with no upfront costs or system modifications. Maine legislation encourages support of Community Solar Energy Projects, and promotes the use of clean, renewable solar energy. If you use Central Maine Power or Versant Power for your business’ electricity, you may be eligible.
