Sprague Operating Resources Reaches Agreement to Sell Portland Wharf Parcel to McAllister Towing, Ensuring Continuity of Essential Marine Services
Transaction positions McAllister to expand regional maritime capabilities and harbor operations in Portland.
Portsmouth, NH — Sprague Operating Resources LLC (“Sprague”) today announced that it has entered into a purchase and sale agreement with McAllister Towing and Transportation Company, Inc. for the acquisition of Sprague’s wharf parcel in Portland, Maine, including the pier and warehouse facilities. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year.
The sale is part of Sprague’s strategic optimization of its Portland terminal footprint—with the “upland” portion being sold to Hearts of Pine for development of a professional soccer stadium. Crucially, this agreement with McAllister ensures that working waterfront infrastructure remains dedicated to active marine use, bringing an expanded suite of professional harbor and logistics services to the port.

Founded in 1864 and operating a fleet of more than 60 tugboats, crew boats, and barges along the U.S. East Coast, McAllister brings over 160 years of maritime excellence to Portland. The company operates across 13 ports from Eastport, Maine, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, providing comprehensive ship docking, general harbor towing, coastal transport, and offshore wind support.
With this acquisition, McAllister plans to integrate the Portland wharf parcel and dock warehouse into its broader network, positioning the company to offer enhanced capabilities—including specialized storage and expanded support for commercial marine operations in Maine.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The closing of the purchase and sale agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and is anticipated to occur by year-end. McAllister Towing will handle all direct press inquiries regarding their future operational plans for the parcel. McAllister is the parent of local tugboat and ship docking company, Portland Tugboat LLC.
